Business Tips: Writing an Elevator Pitch in English

If English is your second language, meeting people in business can be stressful. However, by writing an elevator pitch in English, you’ll be more prepared and less nervous.

What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a brief message about you and your business. It’s a way of introducing yourself concisely. You should be able to tell someone who you are and what you do in the time it takes to ride an elevator to the top floor of a large building—typically 30 seconds. This is a common practice in the U.S. business world, and if you plan to do any work there, you will want a good elevator pitch.

Answer the following questions. Write all your thoughts and edit them later.

1. What do you offer that would catch someone’s attention?

Ask the potential client a question that makes them pay attention. “Would you like the ability to use your business number on multiple devices without interfering with your personal number?”

2. Who are you?

Write this in one sentence. What is your position or role in the company? What is the name of your company or business?

“I am the director of small business sales at ___.”

3. What do you do?

Write a few sentences about what you do.

“I manage a strong customer-focused team that helps me maintain current clients and cultivate new ones.”

4. Who are your clients?

Write down all of your ideas. Next, get specific.

“They are small to mid-size business owners in Spain.”

5. What makes you different?

Why should someone choose you? What makes you special?

“I deliver quality customer service by surrounding myself with an exceptional team. I can help small businesses grow by offering innovative, cost-effective telecommunications options.”
